How to keep your kids safe around dogs, part 2

Rule #2 Don’t hug, do pat a head or scratch a chest.

I know, I know, this is the most disappointing thing I will teach you. The look on people’s faces when I tell them that most dogs hate hugs is downright heartbreaking. But frankly, it’s the truth. I know many a kid who has been bitten because they tried to hug a dog, especially when that dog is sleeping. Hugging is not part of a dog’s natural behavior. To a dog, looming over them, embracing, or pushing on the top of their neck is considered aggression. This can be very scary for a dog. Now, I have said this before, and will say it again: Every dog is different. I met a dog named Chewbacca who genuinely enjoyed being hugged and squeezed, not a calming signal in sight. I also know way more dogs who are so scared of this move they are very willing to become violent to make it stop. Please teach your kids to avoid hugging dogs. Especially stranger dogs, nervous dogs, or dogs not in their household.

Now you may have a dog in your house that is fantastic with kids and whose tolerance for their shenanigans is top notch. But if your kids learn that it’s okay with their dog, they will generalize and think it’s okay with all dogs. Please, save yourself an ER bill and set this boundary with your kids.

If you’re having trouble finding that kid-dog balance in your own household, please reach out, I can help.

I hope this knowledge finds you well.

Have a Barking Good Day!
